GENERAL INFORMATION
What is SHIPS?
SHIPS (or "Internet SHIPS", formerly "SHIP") was created in
order to provide students and staff with a consistently available service at a
low cost. This service is provided by IST -
Communication and Network Services (CNS).
This service consists of 384
high speed (56kbps V.90) modems and network access servers available only
to SHIPS accounts. 384 high speed modems, 8N, 300 bps-56K bps v.34/v.
32bis/v.42/K56flex/V.90 (including MNP 2--4), v.42bis and MNP5
compression, MNP 10.
Unlike Home-IP's 2-hour
limit, the SHIPS service allows an 8-hour session limit. This means that
every dialup connection to the SHIPS modem pool (848-1107) will be dropped
without notice when the connection reaches the 8-hour point. You can dial
back immediately to try to get a new connection.
Who can subscribe to SHIPS?
Only faculty, staff and registered students of UC Berkeley are eligible for Home IP accounts. If you are a faculty member of a different UC campus, you won't be able to use the automated account creation program, but you may be eligible for a Home IP Courtesy Account.
How to setup SHIPS?
