LIPS

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is LIPS?

It is a free internet service that allows laptops to connect to the campus network using an ethernet card. To visit the official LIPS website, click here.

Who can use LIPS?

Currently registered UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use this service.

Where is LIPS available?

This service is available at tables and study carrels in the main stacks of Doe Library and in the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library. Ports with a green sticker are currently active.

How do I sign up for LIPS?

To register for LIPS, you will need your computer's MAC address (click here for instructions on how to access your MAC address). You will also need to make sure your computer is set to dynamically allocate an IP address using DHCP. For instructions on how setting up dynamic allocation, click here. Once you have your MAC address, go to the LIPS registration page to sign up. Your registration will take effect by 6 AM the following morning.

Where can I purchase an ethernet card for my computer?

Any ethernet card with 10 mbps network capability will support LIPS. The UC Berkeley Scholar's Workstation offers these ethernet adapters. To visit their website, click here.

Can I use LIPS like a modem connection?

No. LIPS isn't a dial-in service; you can't plug a telephone line into the port; only a category 5 ethernet cable will work.

Do I have to use dynamic IP allocation for LIPS?

Yes. However, in the future, LIPS plans on adding registration of a fixed IP address so you can stay on a fixed IP address from another connection and use LIPS without reconfiguring your computer.
